What is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of the grade points you earn in a single semester at RGUKT. Every subject carries a certain number of credits based on its weekly teaching/lab hours, and every grade carries a fixed grade point. SGPA multiplies each subject's credits by its grade point, adds these up, and divides by the total credits for the semester.

SGPA is calculated fresh at the end of every semester and is the building block for your CGPA (cumulative performance across all semesters). A single low-credit subject affects your SGPA less than a high-credit subject with the same grade.

Official RGUKT Grading Table

This is the absolute grading table published in RGUKT's Academic Regulations Handbook, applicable to PUC and B.Tech students admitted from 2016-17 onwards. Always confirm against your own campus's latest regulations, since grading rules can be revised.

Note on naming: the official handbook labels the passing 5-point grade "P" and the failing 0-point grade "R", but many students and campuses informally refer to them as "E" and "Remedial" respectively. The point values (5 and 0) are identical either way — this calculator's dropdown includes both names so it matches what you see on your own marks memo.

Formula

SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Credits)

You multiply each subject's credit value by the grade point of the grade you received, add all these credit points together, and divide by the total credits registered for that semester. RGUKT rounds SGPA to two decimal places.

Worked Example

Suppose a student registered for 4 subjects in a semester:

Engineering Mathematics (4 credits) — grade A (9 points) = 36 credit points
Engineering Physics (4 credits) — grade B (8 points) = 32 credit points
Basic Electrical Engineering (4 credits) — grade Ex (10 points) = 40 credit points
Engineering Drawing (3 credits) — grade C (7 points) = 21 credit points

Total credits = 4+4+4+3 = 15. Total credit points = 36+32+40+21 = 129. SGPA = 129 ÷ 15 = 8.60.
