Semester Breakdown

Quick Summary

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your SGPAs across every semester you enter here. It reflects overall academic progress from the first semester up to now.

Your data is saved locally in this browser so you can add new semesters each term without retyping old ones.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Name each semester (optional) and enter its SGPA and total credits registered for that semester.
  2. Click + Add Semester for every semester you've completed so far.
  3. Click Calculate CGPA to get your cumulative grade point average, percentage and academic division.

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of the SGPA you earned in every semester completed so far. Unlike SGPA, which resets each semester, CGPA accumulates — it always reflects your entire academic journey up to the current point.

At RGUKT, CGPA determines branch allocation into engineering (minimum CGPA 6.00 required at the end of PUC), eligibility for promotion, and your final award of division (Distinction, First Class, Second Class or Pass Class) at graduation.

Difference Between SGPA and CGPA

SGPA measures a single semester in isolation — it resets with every new term. CGPA is cumulative: it is the credit-weighted average of every SGPA earned so far, so it changes more slowly and reflects your overall academic record rather than any one term's performance.

Formula

CGPA = Σ(Creditsi × SGPAi) ÷ Σ(Creditsi)

Where Creditsi is the total credits registered for semester i, and SGPAi is that semester's SGPA. This is officially rounded to two decimal places, exactly as specified in the RGUKT Academic Regulations Handbook.

Worked Example

Suppose a student has completed 3 semesters:

  • Semester 1: SGPA 8.20, 21 credits → 172.2 credit points
  • Semester 2: SGPA 7.80, 22 credits → 171.6 credit points
  • Semester 3: SGPA 8.50, 20 credits → 170.0 credit points

Total credits = 21+22+20 = 63. Total credit points = 172.2+171.6+170.0 = 513.8. CGPA = 513.8 ÷ 63 = 8.16. Overall percentage = 8.16 × 10 = 81.6%.

Official Award of Division (Engineering Stream)

CGPA RangeDivision Awarded
CGPA ≥ 8.00Distinction
7.00 ≤ CGPA < 8.00First Class
6.00 ≤ CGPA < 7.00Second Class
5.00 ≤ CGPA < 6.00Pass Class
CGPA < 5.00Remedial

Distinction additionally requires passing every subject in a single attempt, per the official regulations. This table is sourced directly from RGUKT's published Academic Regulations Handbook.

Practical Use Cases

  • Tracking your cumulative CGPA progress term by term across your entire degree.
  • Checking your eligibility for branch allocation (PUC to Engineering) which requires a minimum CGPA of 6.00.
  • Estimating your final division (Distinction / First Class / etc.) before your degree is complete.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Entering a semester's percentage instead of its SGPA — this calculator expects SGPA on a 10-point scale.
  • Forgetting to update a semester's SGPA after a grade is revised following a remedial or revaluation exam.
  • Leaving out a semester with a low SGPA, which gives an inflated, inaccurate CGPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

A simple average of SGPAs would treat every semester equally, but semesters can have different total credits. CGPA weights each semester's SGPA by its credits, so a semester with more credits has proportionally more influence on your final CGPA.

A minimum CGPA of 6.00 at the end of the 4th PUC semester is required to be allocated an engineering branch, along with having passed all subjects with no backlog, as per official RGUKT regulations.

Yes. If a Remedial grade is later cleared or a revaluation changes a grade, RGUKT recomputes SGPA and CGPA from the earliest affected semester onward. Update the corresponding semester's SGPA here and recalculate.
