How to Calculate CGPA Step by Step
The method behind the number, worked across four real semesters — not just the formula.
What CGPA Actually Averages
CGPA is not an average of your semester percentages, and it's not an average of your grades. It's a credit-weighted average of grade points across every semester you've completed. That distinction matters because two students can each average "8 out of 10" per semester and still end up with different CGPAs, if their credit loads were different.
The formula is:
CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Every subject contributes to the total in proportion to its credit value, not as one equal vote. A 4-credit core subject moves your CGPA about four times as much as a 1-credit lab or seminar course with the same grade.
Step-by-Step Method
- List every subject from every completed semester, along with its grade point and credit value. Use your official grade card, not remembered marks — grade point scales differ by institution.
- Multiply each subject's grade point by its credits. This gives the "quality points" earned for that subject.
- Add up the quality points across all subjects, all semesters.
- Add up the credits across all subjects, all semesters.
- Divide total quality points by total credits. The result is your CGPA, usually reported to two decimal places.
If your institution publishes SGPA per semester rather than raw grade points, you can still get an accurate CGPA — see the worked example below, which builds CGPA from semester-level SGPA and credit totals.
Worked Example: Four Semesters
Suppose a student has completed four semesters with the following SGPA and credit totals:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | Quality Points (SGPA × Credits) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 8.2 | 22 | 180.4 |
| Semester 2 | 7.6 | 24 | 182.4 |
| Semester 3 | 8.8 | 21 | 184.8 |
| Semester 4 | 9.0 | 23 | 207.0 |
Total quality points = 180.4 + 182.4 + 184.8 + 207.0 = 754.6
Total credits = 22 + 24 + 21 + 23 = 90
CGPA = 754.6 ÷ 90 = 8.38
Notice this is not the same as the plain average of the four SGPAs (which would be 8.4). The credit-weighted figure is slightly lower because Semester 2, the weakest semester, carried more credits than Semester 3. This is exactly the kind of gap that confuses students who compute CGPA by eye instead of by credit weight — and it's why two students with visually similar semester grades can report different CGPAs.
Common Mistakes
- Averaging semester SGPAs directly instead of weighting by credits, as shown above. This overstates or understates CGPA whenever credit loads vary semester to semester.
- Dropping failed or backlog subjects from the calculation. Most institutions still count a failed subject's credits (often with a 0 grade point) until it is cleared, which pulls CGPA down until you clear it.
- Mixing grade-point scales. A 10-point scale and a 4-point scale produce very different numbers for the same performance — check which scale your institution uses before comparing to a friend at a different college.
- Recalculating from memory instead of the official grade card, especially for older semesters where a grade was revised after a recheck.
Interpreting the Result
A CGPA is a lagging indicator — it tells you where you've been, not where you're headed. Two practical ways to use it:
- Trend, not snapshot: a CGPA rising from 7.6 to 8.4 over four semesters signals a genuinely improving trajectory, which recruiters and scholarship committees read differently from a flat 8.0 across the board.
- Recovery math: because later semesters get averaged in with the same weight as earlier ones, a bad first year takes several strong semesters to fully offset. If you're recovering from a weak start, use the CGPA calculator's goal-planning view to see how many future semesters at what SGPA it takes to reach a target.
